Beton Event 2024: Focus on the decarbonization of the construction industry

Traditionally, on the third Thursday in November, representatives from all sectors of the concrete construction industry and students came together for what the organizer describes as the leading event for exchanging knowledge about the latest trends, technologies and challenges in the industry, as well as for networking.

The Beton Event technical congress, formerly known as Betondag, has a 66-year history. It was held, as it has been for some time, in the Van Nelle factory in Rotterdam, itself a monument to industrial design and architecture of the last century. Organized by the Betonvereniging, the Dutch association of concrete technologists, more than 1,200 people took part, according to information provided by the organizer.

Sustainable construction and the reduction of the CO2 footprint in order to achieve climate neutrality in this sector by 2050 were the focal points and recurring themes throughout the day. This is to be achieved in particular by extending the service life of concrete structures, circular approaches to construction and the production of cement and concrete as well as the development of new building materials.

The approximately 50 exhibiting companies, associations and public clients presented a wide range of products and services, from raw materials and construction machinery to innovative building systems and solutions for sustainable construction. Dyckerhoff presented its new CO2-optimized cements as well as selected projects of the Dutch-based concrete company Dyckerhoff Basal.

The Dyckerhoff exhibition booth was well attended throughout the day. Interested visitors quickly got into conversation with the experts on site. These included two representatives of the Dyckerhoff cement sales organization, Christian Bechtoldt (Technical Consultant and Sales Manager for White Cement) and Pim de Boo (Sales Manager for Grey Cement Netherlands/Belgium) as well as the construction consultant responsible for the Dutch and Belgian markets, Dr. Werner Remarque. In addition, three Dyckerhoff Basal employees from Sales, Concrete Technology and Management – Jan van Diest, Frans Hoksbergen and Mathias Heinrich – were on hand to answer questions from the numerous visitors.

“It was a very informative event that enabled us to have interesting discussions and an intensive exchange with existing customers, potential new customers and students,” concluded Dr. Werner Remarque. The most important topic at the stand was the company's measures to decarbonize its product portfolio. Christian Bechtoldt: “On the one hand, there was particular interest in the Dyckerhoff Weiss BLUE STAR white pozzolanic cement, which is unique in Europe and has a 15% lower CO2 footprint than conventional white cement (CEM I).” “But the clinker-efficient grey cements, new CO2-reduced concretes and our projects for CO2 capture were also extensively discussed topics at the Dyckerhoff booth,” Dr. Remarque added.
